Freshman year. Time seemed to stretch almost like some kind of strange Twilight Zone time dilatation. The first few weeks felt like months as friends were made and people began to come to the realization that they weren't living with mom and dad any more. This was the first time I realized just how important it was that my parents let me be my own person, to explore myself and be myself while I lived at home. For many people, they had never been out from under the Stalin like fists of their parents. These were the people who didn't do work and didn't really want anything to do with school. As if because their parents had made them do homework every day of their school lives, now that they were on their own, they no longer felt any drive. This isn't a bad thing necessarily. This is part of "the college experience", learning to be your own person, making your own mistakes. People did make mistakes and people regretted these things, but they were their mistakes and not their parents mistakes.

It's amazing how when you throw a bunch of strangers into a small city on the top of a hill with little chance of escape, how quickly friends will be made. Within a few weeks the Lounge had already begun to form. The groundwork was laid in the room of Alex Ash, Luke Phillips and Dick Handley. They had been place into the lounge of Maxwell, one of the upper quad buildings of Crown college. People began flocking to the lounge, especially the "nerds" of crown. Adam Schwartzberg, Genica Robbins and Mike Sims were some of the first inductees to the lounge.

Later, Christian Noel, Justin Gaylord, Divij Baboo, Yupeng Gao and many others became involved in the lounge.

This conglomeration of people was the beginning of the Lounge, within a few months a LAN had been set up in the Lounge and Diablo and Quake were furiously played until the wee hours of the night.

Besides playing on the LAN, many of us enjoyed frisbee and on occasion we even managed to find enough people for a game of ultimate frisbee.

So many people were involved in the lounge, we'd like to have everyone's point of view on this page. We will try and incorporate as many stories as we can get about freshman year so if you have something you'd like to see on this or any page of the website, please e-mail Adam or Brian and we'll do what we can to get it on the page. If you'd like to see the first Mark I story by Nathan click on his picture at the top of the page or here.
